Top 10 highest priced items:

1-Stan the T-rex: $31.9M

Named after the paleontologist who discovered him, Stan is one of the most complete Tyrannosaurus rex skeletons ever found, one of only about 50 T. rex fossils ever discovered, with most displayed in museums. First discovered by amateur paleontologist Stan Sacrison in 1987 at Hell Creek formation in the US, part of an area known as the Cretaceous Badlands, the bones were initially misidentified as those of a Triceratops. In 1992, visiting paleontologists began to excavate the bones and realized he was, in fact, a Tyrannosaurus rex. The excavation and restoration of the skeleton took a total of 3 years and 30,000 hours to complete, after which he was put on a custom mount and displayed to the public on Hill City's Main Street in South Dakota.

Paleontologists say Stan would have weighed 7 to 8 tons at his peak and showed signs of a difficult and violent life. He suffered a broken neck, with two of his vertebrae bonding together and a third immobilized. He also had a puncture in his skull and ribs. It is one of the most complete T. rex fossils ever found, with 188 bones, its head in pristine condition, and over 11-inch-long teeth. It has often been used as the model for T. rex figurines and depictions. Casts of Stan sit in institutions such as the National Museum of Natural History in Washington DC and the National Museum of Natural Science in Tokyo, among many others, making it the most widely exhibited dinosaur of all time.

The skeleton, which stands 13 feet (4m) high and 40 feet (12m) long, including the tail, went up for auction at Christie's in New York on October 6, 2020. With an estimated sale price of around $8 million, Stan was expected to become one of the most expensive dinosaurs ever sold. Stan defied all predictions and sold for a whopping $31.9m, the highest price ever achieved by a fossil. At the time of writing, Stan’s new owner remains anonymous, so where in the world the skeleton will end up is unknown.

2-Big Sue: $13.5M

It was huge news in the paleontology world when a 67-million-year-old Tyrannosaurus rex dinosaur was discovered in 1990 on the Cheyenne River Indian reservation in South Dakota. The specimen was discovered by paleontologists Peter Larson and Sue Hendrickson, and so the dinosaur was nicknamed Sue. To this day, though, it's still not known whether the dinosaur was male or female.

Sue is the largest and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex ever to be discovered. It was sold by Sotheby’s in 1997 to the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, with funding help from Disney, McDonald’s, and other companies and individuals. In exchange for their financial assistance, both companies got life-size casts of Sue; Disney installed its replica at Walt Disney World’s Animal Kingdom. McDonald’s, which received two casts, loaned them to museums and sent them on tour as traveling exhibits.

Her body is 42 feet (12.8m) long and has an estimated weight of at least 6.
